| Research Projects: | Preeclampsia is a principle hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, affecting the health of both mother and fetus. The disease causes maternal systemic inflammation, increases risk of atherosclerosis late in life, and is particularly dangerous when it occurs early in pregnancy. Epidemiological study has suggested chronic infection with Chlamydiae pneumoniae and cytomegalovirus linked to atherogenesis. My current PhD project is to investigate the role of cytomegalovirus and Chlamydiae pneumoniae in preeclampsia. The aim of this study is to examine these two pathogen activation and maternal innate immune response in different onset of preeclampsia and compared with normal pregnancy and non-pregnancy controls. By modifying the potential inflammasome target, it will protect against diverse microorganisms and ease the maternal inflammatory syndrome. Through a greater understanding of the infectious facets of preeclampsia, we hope to spur improvements in both mother and fetus health care. |
