Research Projects:

Tetrastarch and Pentastarch Effect on Coagulation in Elective Cesarean Delivery Patients.

Colloid intravenous solutions may impair blood's ability to clot.  Tetrastarch Voluven is a new colloid approved by Health Canada and FDA.  Voluven has been proven to cause less coagulation problems compared to other colloids in cardiac, vascular, pediatric and geriatric patients.  There are no published studies related to obstetric population.  We will be evaluating Voluven and Pentaspan effects on coagulation using thromboelastopraphy.

Pulse Wave Analysis and Augmentation Index changes associated with Neuraxial Anesthesia in the Parturient.

Peripheral arterial pulse waves and pressures characteristics may predict incidence and severity of low blood pressure (hypotension) after spinal anesthesia for Cesarean Section.  A noninvasive device called Sphymacor measures pulse wave characteristics and calculates "augmentation index" predicting hemodynamic instability in surgical patients.  We will be evaluating Sphymacor accuracy and usefulness in pregnant population.
