Research Projects:

Epidural Needle Study

This is a multicentre randomized controlled trial which is looking at the incidence and nature of headaches that may occur following epidural analgesia for labor pain.  It compares two epidural needles and catheters - a larger, more traditional needle & catheter with a smaller epidural needle and cathether.

Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) Block

This is a randomized, controlled trial comparing the use of a TAP block with standard intrathecal morphine for post cesarean delivery pain.  This is being done in patients having elective cesarean sections under spinal anesthesia.  They all receive standard postoperative analgesia orders and the primary outcome is the number of morphine equivalents received for postoperative pain.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Study

This observational study is looking at the incidence of OSA in the obstetric population being admitted to BCW int he third trimester.  This is being correlated with an airway examination.  A validated screening tool (STOP BANG) is being used to determine the incidence of OSA and those women with OSA symptoms are being followed postpartum to see whether their sympstoms change postpartum.

PIERS Preeclampsia Integrated Estimate of Risk Model

This is a multicentre trial which aims to predict combined maternal adverse outcomes using certain defined variables.
